Curtis believes his own chances are as slim as they were in 2003 when he was a 300-1 outsider, but he hopes that some of the magic of the Royal St George's links can rub off on him again.
"It definitely gives you a little bit of confidence because you know you've done it before, and there's no reason why you can't do it again," he said.
"I just hope this is my week. But I'm not going to think about holding that trophy yet. Hopefully when the last putt is holed on Sunday it will be coming my way, but we'll see."

The world No 80 will play the championship course and the fateful 16th again for the first time in practise on Tuesday and said: "When I get there I won't be thinking 'this is a horror hole' - it's a good hole.
"I just tried to erase it from my memory, but it might just creep into my mind on Sunday if I am playing well!
"You've really got a problem if you live eight years in the past. It was difficult for me when I played at Troon in 2004 - I really didn't want to be there - but these are the events you want to play in and I'm delighted.
"At the same time, though, there's some big names who have pulled out and you don't want to see that."
Bjorn will tee off at 7:25 am on Thursday with England's Simon Dyson - he was another of the reserves called in - and American Gary Woodland.

Curtis, the man who benefitted most from Bjorn's collapse that day eight years ago, said he and Bjorn had met several times since the drama of that day but that what happened was seldom the topic of conversation.
"I played with him a few times since then and we played together at the World Matchplay, the year I think he beat me in the semis," he said.
"We talked a little bit about it, but I'm not going to say anything to him about what happened. You don't wish that upon anybody.
"It's just a terrible thing that's happened to him, but he's moved on and he's played quite well since then."
Curtis believes his own chances are as slim as they were in 2003 when he was a 300-1 outsider, but he hopes that some of the magic of the Royal St George's links can rub off on him again.
"It definitely gives you a little bit of confidence because you know you've done it before, and there's no reason why you can't do it again," he said.
"I just hope this is my week. But I'm not going to think about holding that trophy yet. Hopefully when the last putt is holed on Sunday it will be coming my way, but we'll see."

What makes it such a tricky challenge is that the 11 tournaments have been won by 11 different players in a stark illustration of how dramatically different golf's landscape has become since Tiger Woods slipped from his once-dominant perch.
Rory McIlroy, hot favourite to triumph at the British Open this week, became the 11th when he won the US Open last month. Before him came Charl Schwartzel (Masters), Martin Kaymer (US PGA), Louis Oosthuizen (British Open), Graeme McDowell (US Open), Phil Mickelson (Masters), Yang Yong-eun (US PGA), Stewart Cink (British Open), Lucas Glover (US Open), Angel Cabrera (Masters) and Padraig Harrington (US PGA).
Harrington also won the British Open in 2008, which coming after Woods's US Open triumph and Trevor Immelman's victory in the Masters that year makes it 13 different winners of the last 14 majors.
"The game is in a transition and I would really say a transition from Tiger," 18-times major champion Jack Nicklaus said after McIlroy swept through the US Open.
"Tiger's still going to be around and he's going to play a lot more golf -- and going to play well. But he's going to play against a lot of kids that are 10, 15 years younger than he is who are good."
Woods won the 2008 US Open despite struggling with the knee injury that eventually required surgery and kept him out of the remaining majors of the year.
His subsequent domestic problems kept him off the course for almost five months and on his return he struggled to rediscover his best form.

"I like Marat - he is a friend of mine. It is a long trip (to come here to play). But playing with Marat is a bonus to me, because of our history and our respect for each other," said Sampras, who quit professional tennis in 2003 after winning 14 major titles, including a record seven at Wimbledon.
"I am really excited to come back here. I had wonderful memories here and it's great fun to play with Pete again," said Safin, the event's 2004 champion.
The Russian, who enjoys a solid fan base in China, experienced an emotional farewell ceremony at the China Open in 2009 before formally announcing his retirement at the Paris Masters one month later.
Although both Sampras' iconic net volley and Safin's big serve are less powerful than in their heydays, the clash recalled their classic battle at the 2000 US Open final.
In the epic final, the "czar" stunned the American favorite in straight sets to claim his first Grand Slam crown before grabbing his second and final major title at the Australian Open in 2005.
"There is nothing I could do that day, he played so well, his serve was so huge. He deserves that victory," said Sampras, who delivered five championships of his own at Flushing Meadows.
"We are glad to return to the focus. Don't forget how powerful he (Safin) truly is. We are both happy to be here," Sampras said.
Safin returned the compliment.
"I am really excited. Pete is like an old pappy now, but still competitive on the court," he said.
Remaining in good shape after leaving tennis for eight years, Sampras, who still holds a record 286-week reign as world No 1, shook off the "possible pressure" to maintain his dominance.
"I never had (an idea that I would be) on top for so long," he said.
"It just happens. It wasn't anything I planed as a kid. It takes a lot work to stay on there. You are a marked man, (so many people are) looking forward to taking you down.
"I am proud of that, I am more proud of winning so many majors through the years - I grew up with so many big names."
Sampras' rivalry with Andre Agassi headlined a golden era for tennis in the 1990.
Sampras, 40, stays busy as a full-time father to his two sons, honing his swing on the golf course and ocassionally appearing at exhibition matches.
Meanwhile, Safin serves as the vice president of the Russian Tennis Fderation and a member of the Russian Olympic Committee to promote the cultivation of the sport's youth.
"It's good for me to do something related to sports. It's a big relief for me. My life changed completely, new goals, new achievement and new stage. Tennis will be always here, but I will also try something else," said the 31-year-old.

A good draw does not mean anything: Li Na

Llodra and Zimonjic capture China Open title
BEIJING - Third-seeded duo Michael Llodra and Nenad Zimonjic overpowered Robert Lindstedt and Horia Tecau 7-6 (2), 7-6 (4) to take the China Open men's doubles title here on Sunday.
Llodra of France and Zimonjic of Serbia experienced a tough match against their opponents, decided by two suffocating tie breakers. Llodra and Zimonjic withstood the pressure and displayed some high quality tennis to seal the match in one hour and 48 minutes.
"I feel great to win such a great game in China, it is the first time for both of us and I want to thank Michal for such a great week," Zimonjic said at the news conference.
The runners-up also won high recognition from the winners.
"They are a great team, both of them are big guys, it's never easy to play against them. We did better in tie breaker and some important points," Zimonjic added.

SHANGHAI - Rafael Nadal refused Tuesday to discuss any potential meeting between players in Shanghai this week to discuss the punishing demands of the tennis schedule.
America's Andy Roddick said on Monday that Shanghai Masters no-shows from world No 1 Novak Djokovic and 16-time Grand Slam champion Roger Federer were stark evidence of the of heavy playing commitments.
It followed comments from Britain's Andy Murray last month that he had held several talks with other players at the US Open and they would be discussing the issue in Shanghai, though he said on Tuesday there had been no developments.
"There is something there, but is not the right moment to talk about it, especially when nothing clear is done," Nadal said.
"Always is better to talk about the things when you know exactly what's going to happen and when you know exactly what we are going to do," he added.
But the Spanish world No 2 said there was broad agreement among players over the issue.
"I am in touch always with the rest of the players. You know, I talked a lot with a lot of players last month. We'll see what we can do."
"The important thing is that, yes, I can say because I'm sure we are, most of us, almost everyone, in the same way. So like this we have power. Now we'll have to keep finding what we really want for the future and make that happen if possible."
World No 4 Murray said the players would try to set up a meeting before the end of the year, but he sought to play down the issue.
"The players haven't met. The players will try and meet. When we do, you know, then I think it's really between the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) and the ITF (International Tennis Federation) to try and come to an agreement," he said.

Tiger moves into contention before slipping back
SAN MARTIN, California - Tiger Woods finally worked his way into the upper reaches of the Frys.com Open leaderboard in Saturday's third round, though he failed to capitalise on good momentum after the turn.
The former world number one briefly got to within three strokes of the lead after making four birdies in his first 11 holes before problems on two par-threes over his closing stretch resulted in a three-under 68.
Playing in his first PGA Tour event in almost two months, Woods has been largely happy with his day-to-day progress but a four-under total of 203 was not good enough to keep him in contention after another perfect day for scoring at a sun-splashed CordeValle Golf Club.
"The golf course could have been had today, if you drive the ball decent and hit some wedges in there," Woods told reporters after mixing five birdies with two bogeys.
"A couple of the par-fives are reachable and then it's obviously drivable there at 17 (the 358-yard par-four). Guys can take it deep out there.
"It's getting better," he said of his own form. "I'm improving day by day. Obviously tomorrow I need to improve a lot, make the putts and post a really low one."
Woods came into this week under heavy scrutiny but with lofty expectations after finally putting behind him lingering leg injuries and practising without limitations.
Having struggled for form and fitness for most of the year while working on the fourth swing change of his professional career, he said the would be satisfied with nothing less than victory at CordeValle.
Putting struggles
However, he struggled badly with his putting on rain-softened greens as he opened with a two-over 73 before inching his way back up the leaderboard with successive 68s.
"I would like to just keep building on it," said Woods, whose world ranking has slipped to 51st since his spectacular downfall at the end of 2009 amid allegations of serial philandering.
"I was very close to really putting it together on the front nine -- birdie 17 and 18, and all of a sudden, I'm five under."
